What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?
Carolynn Mowen, president, Max & Madeleine
You don’t need an “expert” to guide you in making decisions for your business. Believe in your abilities as far as leadership qualities and let your gut (and your heart) determine your direction. Your business will succeed the most when it truly embodies who you and your partner are as people, and not the product of a bunch of “well-seasoned” professionals who are just reinventing the wheel for you. Step outside your level of comfort and do it yourself!
Kevin Raulston, president, Direct Cellars
The best advice I’ve received is that in the long term, everything’s short term. You need to always have a vision of where you’re going, but you’ve got to take care of today and tomorrow, and the next couple of months as well. And if you stop paying attention to both, as an executive you’ll lose your way. If you only make short-term decisions, they can throw you off your long-term path. But if you are always focused on just the big picture, you may be in danger of not making this week’s shipments happen. A lot of times people focus on one or the other, but you need business bifocals to look at both.
