In a surprise benefit to direct sellers in the U.S., the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 (TCJA) includes significant tax breaks for independent contractors. Doug Long, director of communications and training for tax software firm Deductr, says, “Most taxpayers, including independent contractors, will see the largest benefit from the increase of the standard deduction rate and the overall lower tax brackets.”
Joe Hillstead, partner at Utah-based Squire & Company, says the new tax law is beneficial to every salesforce and suggests companies should educate their distributors on the additional benefits. “It certainly makes becoming a distributor more attractive from the standpoint of keeping more of your earnings,” he says.
